Visit Dandong — the Chinese gateway to the DPRK

Little-known but certainly a city deserving of your time and attention. This is China’s most fascinating border city for sure. Historically and strategically crucial to China’s power in the region and looking across the Yalu into North Korea, the differences between the two countries are clearly laid out and this makes Dandong perfect as an extension to any DPRK tour. See the highlights of the city and surrounding area. Enjoy some of the best street food (particularly the fresh seafood) in China, try the famous Yalu River beer, enjoy nightlife and a walk along the river where locals play games and promenade. Easy to get around and populated by friendly and helpful local, this is an ideal extension too for visitors to China looking to go somewhere other than the usual Beijing-Shanghai-Xi’an axis of tourism.

Dandong 1-Night Extension

See the highlights of China's most fascinating small city - where the Great Wall meets North Korea, the 'broken bridge' (bombed by the US Air Force to slow the Chinese advance in the war), a boat trip along the Yalu river between PRC and DPRK, some great food, and lively nightlife too. A perfect addition to any DPRK tour

Itinerary

  1. The Great Wall of China
  2. Border Boat Trip
  3. Broken Bridge
  4. Get up close to the DPRK border!

Day 1.

  • After leaving Pyongyang on the 10:10 train and enjoying the ride through rural DPRK you cross the bridge into China passing customs from both countries. Disembark and meet the local guide in Dandong. The extension begins!
  • Have a delicious dinner of local specialties before a night of freedom to try out some local nightlife or simply relax

Day 2.

  • First stop is the eastern edge of China’s famous Great wall, located at a place called Tiger Mountain. The wall terminates atop a hill overlooking a North Korean island, just a metre from the Chinese side of the narrow river, don’t step across it though!
  • Boat Trip on the Yalu River – to get a peek into the border city of Sinuiju. The river itself is the border between the two countries so this ship swings very close to the DPRK shore, close enough to exchange greetings and waves with locals on the other side
  • Broken Bridge – the iconic attraction of Dandong is a bridge that leads across the river – to nowhere. It was bombed in 1951 by the US Air Force and never repaired. A viewing platform halfway across terminates this cul-de-sac as well as being a great place for photos
  • Next you’ll have some free time to wander Dandong before meeting up beneath the deep red Chairman Mao statue (no need to bow here!) to board the train to Beijing at 18:30 after a full and amazing day!

Dandong 2-Night Extension

Extend your stay to see some of the fascinating border areas around Dandong. Drive up the Yalu river to a large Hydroelectric dam operated jointly by the Chinese and North Koreans, get a peek at some of the DPRK's mysterious and little-seen border towns along the shared border, and much more besides!

Itinerary

  1. Hekou Broken Bridge
  2. Shared Chinese-North Korean Dams
  3. Speedboat ride between DPRK islands
  4. Korean river ports, villages & military guard points
  • After breakfast you start by driving up along the Chinese-North Korean border, there are several scenic stops along the way offering views into little-seen areas of the Korean side, pass some operational bridges where trade takes place and then make a visit to the Hekou Broken Bridge, a smaller cousin to the main broken bridge in Dandong. This is where Chairman Mao’s son Mao Anying crossed with the Volunteer Army into Korea, and never returned (he is buried in Hoechang City, DPRK).
  • From here you continue the drive to the giant Shui Feng Hu Hydroelectric Dam – operated jointly by both sides generating power for nearby settlements and mining areas. You can see the stark difference between the electrical management infrastructure clearly and see engineers and workers from both sides on their respective shores
  • Lunch in a local village restaurant where you can chat to the villagers about their lives and answer their questions about your own
  • Visit the Taipingwan Dam, another shared facility and see the local town that shares the name of the dam, then take a thrilling speedboat trip down a channel of water that separates the DPRK mainland from a large North Korean island. As the river itself is a shared border you can do this kind of trip and have no left Chinese territory until you climb onto Korean dry-land (note: DO NOT DO THIS!), you can see a river port, local Korean village, and various military guard points here – a weird and unforgettable experience. Please note that as of September 2018, speedboat tours have been suspended. We are working with our partners to provide an alternative activity.
  • You’ll get back to Dandong city in time for the 18:30 overnight train to Beijing, enriched by the experience of travelling in this unusual borderland
